Merseyside giants Everton have been eliminated from the Carabao Cup this season after they were beaten by English Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers (QPR) on penalties after the two teams had produced a four-goal thriller.
England international Andros Townsend has been in good form for the Toffees in front of goal this season and he was able to continue that form with one of the two Everton goals in a 2-2 draw. Charlie Austin scored a brace for home team QPR during the Carabao Cup third round clash with the first of the two goals coming on 18 minutes. Everton levelled matters on the half hour mark thanks to the strike from French left-back Lucas Digne.
Austin proved to be the thorn in the flesh of the Everton defenders as he was responsible for giving hosts QPR the lead for the second time during the game. He completed his brace four minutes after the Everton equaliser from Digne. His brace gave QPR a 2-1 lead at the half-time interval.
England international Andros Townsend ensured that Everton were level for the second time in the game. His goal in the second minute of the second half ensured that Everton and QPR had to rely on penalties to determine who will go through to the fourth round. The second Everton goal from England international winger Townsend prompted penalties and it was QPR who triumphed 8-7 to book their place in the next round as far as the Carabao Cup is concerned.
England winger Townsend became an Everton player in the summer as he was snapped on a free transfer. He signed for the Toffees as a free agent after his contract with Crystal Palace ended this summer. His first goal for Everton came in the 3-1 comeback win over Burnley in the Premier League earlier this month.
